El Mangroove
Gulf of Papagayo, Guanacaste
This Guanacaste resort has all the touches needed for a relaxing stay, surrounded by mangroves and forest trees. Overlooking the Gulf of Papagayo, the hotel offers guests multiple swimming pools (including one adults-only), the Bearth Spa, Wyl gym, and two open-air restaurants, Makoko and ocean-view Matiss.
The guest suite design is modern and spacious featuring large windows that frame peaceful forest views, with natural materials and textures expressed in the aesthetic. Rooms come with balconies and hammocks – our favorite is the Habitat Superior – with some featuring refreshing plunge pools on wooden terrace decks.

We loved the resort´s comfort and location. Suites with separate living areas and spacious bathrooms made for an easy stay with lots of pools and water features around the grounds to slip straight into a holiday vibe. We liked how El Mangroove can bask in the beauty of Culebra Bay without feeling too isolated; it´s just 15 minutes to the nearest town and at a 20-minute drive from Liberia (LIR) Airport it felt amazing to jump in the pool within an hour of touching down!
- Makoko & ocean-view Matiss restaurants.

El Mangroove received the highest-ranking level 5 in its Certification for Sustainable Tourism (CST), reflecting the hotel´s commitment to the environment and the sustainable development of the community.
Local materials were used in the construction of the property, and the wood of trees that did have to be cut down was recycled into furniture and mirror frames. Water-efficient faucets, recycling, dual-flush toilets for water conservation, and wastewater treatment for use in irrigation are amongst the property's sustainable operations.
95% of produce is sourced from local fishermen and farmers, and the majority of food products used are organic. El Mangroove also hosts summer camps where the area’s schoolchildren have the opportunity to learn English.
