Tabacón Thermal Resort & Spa

Tabacón is an active member of the local community and runs a whole host of initiatives that divide into three main pillars based on the environment, community, and culture. Water conservation, environmental education, energy management, and water treatment programs are in place, as well as a reforestation project with the aim of carbon neutrality.  The hotel produces its own organic fertilizer and plants for the gardens, and uses volcano-heated water and clean energy generated from solar panels. The resort provides staff development and internship programs in addition to health and wellness schemes for staff and the local public. Ingredients used in the kitchen are regionally sourced, supporting local providers, and Tabacón is involved in developing schools and childcare facilities for the community. On-property, Costa Rican identity, gastronomy, and cultural activities in the area are promoted. In 2003 Grano de Oro’s owners, Eldon and Lori Cooke, started Casa Luz. Now managed by a non-profit association, the project provides a safe space for young women and children who experience abuse and sexual exploitation at home.
