Las Catalinas has restored the land from pasture to its original tropical dry forest ecosystem, through preventing fires with its own fire brigade, prohibiting hunting, and planting trees – since 2007, more than 5,000 trees of 13 native evergreen species have been planted. Trails for hiking, biking, running, and reaching viewpoints have been sustainably made with local materials and erosion-resistant engineering techniques.
The property has created a recycling education campaign, is developing a recycling system for the region with the local government, and has a state-of-the-art water treatment plant so wastewater can be reused for irrigation and forest fire control. In an effort to help the local wildlife thrive, Las Catalinas features stone water holes to provide year-round drinking water, rope bridges to allow animals like monkeys to cross roads and power lines safely, and occasionally relocates animals to remote areas of the property´s dry forest habitat to avoid negative encounters.
