Sendero has implemented various measures in a conscious effort to minimize its negative effects on the environment and support its local communities.
The hotel was built on an existing, previously developed footprint, adding only a swimming pool, and using repurposed clay bricks, clay tiles, and rapid-growth wood from responsible teak farms. Through a high-quality treatment system, all black water is transformed and reused for irrigation and the property uses energy efficient A/C units and water heaters, as well as hi-R- value insulation on roofs throughout the building.
Amenities in guest rooms are local and organic, plus a high percentage of the restaurant's ingredients are sourced from suppliers in the area. All hotel, restaurant and surf school staff are locals or residents, employed year-round and with corresponding social security. Sendero also features an on-site art gallery that showcases and sells the work of exclusively Costa Rican artists. The property is in the process of installing photovoltaic panels that will cover at least 50% of the building's electricity demands.
