We love the sense of adventure you can´t help but feel at Pacuare Lodge. Arriving to the hotel rafting down a beautiful river is unbeatable, and even more so when the scenery looks like its straight out of a movie set. There are tons of activities to get you immersed in the surroundings – many of which are complimentary - from powerful rapids, to ziplines, hikes, birdwatching, and night walks. Be sure to join one of the daily sustainability walks to go behind the scenes of the property´s sterling conservation efforts – each guest contributes a fee with their stay so it´s great to see exactly how this makes a difference!

The Boena Wilderness Lodges group is a leader in sustainable accommodation and as a member, Pacuare Lodge runs extensive programs and partnerships that help environmental conservation and benefit nearby communities.

Zero trees were cut down during the construction of the lodge and lumber was used from a reforestation project run by small farms. To date, the lodge has purchased 840 acres of primary rainforest along the Pacuare River to both protect the local ecosystem and to offset the atmospheric carbon created by its vehicles. Two hydroelectrical turbines and 120 solar panels generate clean energy for electricity, and there are management plans in place to reduce water and electricity use.

The property is free from single-use plastic bottles, a scheme is set up to recycle organic and solid waste, plus Boena established the nearby Tuis Farm which grows organic produce for the lodge´s meals as well as teaching organic farming practices to local community members. Pacuare Lodge assists the Jaguar Program - a project that studies felines and contributes to the preservation of ecosystems - by providing researchers with food, lodging, expedition equipment, and local guides.

Taking social responsibility to heart, Pacuare Lodge´s entire staff consists of residents from nearby communities. The hotel supports schools, environmental education, sports and social programs in the area, and has even restored the cable car service which residents use to cross the river. The lodge also serves as a classroom for training and basic courses available to the Cabecar Indigenous population living in nearby reserves. The property supports community commerce by buying locally and guiding experiences that visit and benefit the Cabecar and Bajo del Tigre communities, in addition to launching the Turrialba Foundation, a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable living,

For its continued efforts, Boena has received the highest rating in both the Costa Rican government’s Ecological Blue Flag Program for River Watersheds and the Instituto Costarricense de Turismo (ICT) Sustainable Tourism Certificate (CST).
