  • Why we love it
  • Highlights
  • Sustainability

We were blown away by Tortuga Lodge´s unique location on a riverbank (arrival by boat!) with such proximity to the natural world that you almost felt part of it. We loved the property´s commitment to conservation as one of Böëna´s Wilderness Lodges. The eco-group has intentionally acquired thousands of acres of primary and secondary forest in an act of protection and seeks to transform our relationship with nature. Lumber for construction is sourced from reforestation tree farms, electricity and heating is generated by solar power, organic food is served in the restaurant, the majority of staff are local residents, and all hotel-operations are carbon-neutral. This is a sustainability model to be followed!

Tortuga Lodge & Gardens believes that responsible tourism should benefit local communities and action be taken to make this a reality. This eco-lodge has many practices in place to reduce negative harm to the environment and celebrate the culture of the region.

The property features restored original Caribbean Victorian architecture and design, with suites named after locals that were renowned for contributing to the area’s gastronomy, leadership, and development. Tortuga Lodge & Gardens is also a proud sponsor of the local Caribbean School of Music, where over thirty children and adolescents have the opportunity to learn about Caribbean-style music and are encouraged to spread culture and art in Tortuguero and San Francisco. Through this program, free weekly classes are available to students using traditional instruments like conga and bongo drums, cowbells, guitars, ukuleles, banjos, and quijongos.

Approximately 55% of the lodge´s total energy consumption is supplied by 55 solar panels and using high-tech software, consumption patterns are analyzed to efficiently distribute the energy generated by the panels throughout the day. Through a high-tech system of filters and ultraviolet light, local water is purified for drinking, helping to eliminate the use of plastic bottles.
